What is user-centred design?
User-centred design (UCD) is a collection of processes that focus on putting users at the centre of product design and development. In this case, we will focus on web design and development. When a product team develops digital products, it takes into account the user’s requirements, objectives, and feedback. Every design decision evaluates whether it delivers value to the users, making satisfying the user’s needs and wants a priority. A User-centred design gives you a way of adding an emotional impact to your website designs.
It prioritizes understanding the users’ needs, preferences, and goals, to deliver features that meet their expectations. This approach has become a critical aspect of user experience, as it ensures that the customer’s perspective is at the forefront of design and development decisions. User-centred design carefully analyzes and designs every interaction or “touchpoint” that a user has with the product to meet their needs, relying on user feedback instead of personal opinions. This ensures that user-centred design refines and improves every aspect of the customer experience.

UCD is closely related to user experience.
How does the user-centred design process work?
Now that we’ve laid out what UCD is, let’s take a closer look at how the process works. The UCD process typically consists of four steps:
- First, we need to understand the user and in which context the user will be interacting with the website.
- Second. Specification of user and business requirements
- Once the above is defined, it will be easier to continue to step three, create the website’s design solutions.
- Step four. Evaluate the designs.
Why we think UCD is important.
In the years that we have been in business, we have dealt with a lot of clients that wish to put their business at the forefront, forgetting about the fact that their website is really about the users and how they experience it. If they find it frustrating to navigate or can’t easily find what they are looking for, they will move on to the next website. The users care about what you do, not who you are, which comes later. First of all, they want to know if you offer the services, products and/or experience that they need. After they have determined that you offer what they need, they might have a look at your about page to see how long you have been in business and who you are.
In our next blog post, we will explore each of the steps in the process to create a great design for your clients, which centres around the user.
